Lyonel Feininger

German-American painter and caricaturist, Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956). I first ran into Feininger when I was doing research on Winsor McCay a couple years ago, and found examples of his short lived newspaper comic strips The Kin-der-Kids and Wee Willie Winkie’s World. Im not a huge fan of his cubist paintings, but his art that hybrid’s his comic style with his cubist influence is fine and dandy by me.

Winsor McCay

Little Sammy Sneeze (above) was a reaccurring cartoon strip from 1904-1906 by Winsor McCay. Poor little Sammy sneezed and caused havoc in every single comic strip in the two year run. I LOVE Winsor McCay’s work with my whole heart, and truly believe his work is genius. Even restricted to the structured medium of newspaper comics, his imagination literally broke the boundaries of the medium. Below are a few examples from his most popular comic series Little Nemo in Slumberland.
